Michael J. Hanagan graduated with honors from Regis College in 1973.  He earned his Juris Doctoris degree from Saint Louis University in 1976, where he won the American Jurisprudence Award for excellence in legislation.  This course focused on the legal principles that are used to interpret statutes, and Michael earned the top grade in his class.

Since beginning practice in 1976, Michael has specialized in litigation, representing injury victims and their families in cases against insurance companies and product manufacturers.  He has prosecuted hundreds of these cases, ranging from motor vehicle collisions to those involving defective products and complex insurance coverage issues.

In 1989, the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association elected Michael to its Board of Managers, and he has continued to serve in that position.

In 1993, Michael was board certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy (NBTA).  The process of certification required proof of an enhanced level of skill and expertise in trial advocacy, including courtroom experience of having tried at least 15 cases and passing a day-long written examination.  The NBTA requires re-certification every five years, and Michael has been re-certified continuously since first earning this credential in 1993.

Over the years, Michael has frequently been invited to speak at seminars for continuing legal education (CLE), especially those aimed at teaching and training trial lawyers.  He has spoken on topics including evidence law, civil procedure, Jury instructions, reformation of underinsured motorist coverage,  Intrastate Forum Non Conveniens and trial advocacy and has presented papers on "Summary Judgment for the Plaintiff," and "Inoculation Against Counter persuasion."

In August of 2003, Michael completed his advanced law degree concentrated in the areas of dispute resolution, arbitration, and insurance law at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law.  The University conferred upon him the degree of Legum Magister.  Few practicing attorneys achieve this level of education in the law.

In service to the community, Michael has contributed substantial time and effort to the People's Law School and has also helped coach local high school students for several seasons of their Mock Trial program.

Michael's current practice is concentrated in helping people injured by semi and tractor-trailer trucks, motor vehicle collisions, and defective products.
